Maya’s POV
Calling me furious would be an understatement. Every step I took toward the exit felt so weighted that I was certain the floorboards beneath me would crack and give way. His footsteps followed mine like an ominous echo down the hallway.
“Maya, please, listen to me!” Thomas pleaded behind me.
But I refused. I couldn’t bear to. Just as my hand closed around the doorknob, Thomas lunged forward and caught my wrist in a firm grip. All restraint left me in that instant. I spun around without a word and struck him hard across the face.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” I screamed, chest heaving with anger.
He barely flinched. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes level with mine. “I told you—let me explain.”
