Restless, Rowan toyed with his phone, wearing a contemplative smile. Indeed, everyone had found what he wanted them to see, right? But then, he wondered, would hearing good news bring elation?

After a moment’s thought, he dialed a familiar number. “Hey?” a low voice answered.

“Bonita, how’s everything? Did everything go as you hoped? Shouldn’t you be grateful to me?” Rowan’s voice sounded somewhat forced, with a touch of playfulness.

“I’m a bit busy at the moment. Let’s talk later, okay?” Bonita replied, cutting the call before Rowan could respond. He frowned, feeling somewhat disappointed and wondering if something was amiss.

Bonita’s tone on the phone sounded disgruntled, lacking the usual joy. Could it be that things didn’t go smoothly yesterday? Or perhaps something unexpected happened?

Rowan felt a bit puzzled and annoyed, slamming his fist on the desk, creating a loud thud. He lit a cigarette, inhaling deeply as
