“It really is gorgeous,” Emelda says the next morning while walking with me to the library. She runs her thumb over the massive sapphire ring and smiles faintly, raising her brows. “I think it’s a family heirloom, too. You should expect a load of fine jewelry to follow.”
“You know I don’t care about all of that.” I laugh as we turn into the library. It’s snowing again. The sky is deep gray, and fluffs of white race to the ground beyond the windows. My voice echoes through the cavernous space as I say, “I’m just… I’m not sure how to feel. I’m excited, so incredibly happy but also… worried.”
I follow a few steps behind Emelda as she guides me to a section in the recesses of the library where Kane’s family history books are kept. She starts scanning the shelf. “Why are you worried? You’re a princess marrying a prince.”
“My father,” I whisper, and she sighs, pulling a thick book from the shelf.
“Will he say no?”
“I doubt it
