Chapter 59. A Trap
Lennox’s POV
The road to the colonies stretches out like a black line beneath the wheels of the SUV. The hum of the engine is steady, almost settling, but none of us are calm. Levi rides shotgun, keeping his eyes straight ahead, but his fingers drumming against his thigh in a rhythm I recognize as nerves. Louis sits in the back, checking and re-checking the rifle strapped across his lap. Not that guns matter much when we shift, but they buy time, and sometimes time is the difference between living and dying.
Lotus stayed behind, wanting to stay at her father’s side. We didn’t argue, it is the first time she hasn’t thrown herself into danger since I met her. But it doesn’t mean that we feel at ease leaving her behind. We all feel better when she is by our sides.
I grip the steering wheel tighter, jaw clenched. The night is thick with tension, heavier than the usual pre-battle silence. The moon rides low above us, as if it is watching. Always watching.
