While Mom and Magnus were talking, Damon came up behind me. He didn’t even have to speak for me to know that he was not happy with the situation that was going on. He stood unusually straight, and his eyes had a harder glint than normal. The softness he’d shown before was wiped away.
“How can I help you, Mistress?” he pressed.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. It was better for me to apologize first. I didn’t want Damon upset with me. He was the only ally I had in this place. Without him, the torture would be far worse. “I didn’t mean to put you on the spot like that. It was selfish, and I wasn’t thinking.”
“Put me on the spot again,” Damon reminded me.
“Again,” I agreed. “But—”
Damon shook his head. “Don’t worry, Mistress. I’ll make sure to fulfill my duties. I have not had to work with Shepard before, but I’m sure between the two of us we will keep you safe.”
