Chapter 309. A Curse?

[Flashback continues]
Even though I didn’t know exactly what this police officer had been through, I could feel his pain deeply. I could somehow empathize with him because he said minutes ago that he had been carrying the weight of two lifetimes all on his own.
The tremble of his shoulders, the way his back moved with each sob, the slight pressure of his head resting against my shoulder while I rubbed his back gently—each movement spoke of the hurt he carried. I didn’t know him, but I wanted to help ease his suffering, to take some of that weight off his shoulders, even if only a little.
I didn’t know if my embrace was helping, but it was the best thing I could offer at that moment. I didn’t have the right words to say; after all, I had no idea what he had endured. So, I stayed silent, letting the quiet comfort of the moment speak for itself.
