I had expected that Asher would call tonight. Even Lee had anticipated it and told me I should take the chance to ask Tate about the status of his relationship with Gracie—whether it was true that he was courting her, as Lee had heard. Still, even though I had mentally prepared for the call, it felt like someone had poured ice-cold water over me when my phone suddenly rang and Tate’s name flashed on the caller ID.
I shot to my feet so fast that I almost tripped over myself. Like an idiot, I started doing an impromptu obstacle course around the room—stretching, jumping, and even shaking my arms out as if I were preparing for a marathon. My nerves were completely out of control. My heart was pounding so loudly it felt like it might burst out of my chest, and my hands were trembling uncontrollably.
