As far as strip joints went, ‘Sirens’ was not too bad. It was located all the way out in West Virginia, but when a group of the guys went together, they usually just got a stretch Hummer and piled up inside. No one wanted to get caught with a DUI to help put a stop to a career that was fleeting to begin with, so having a driver was imperative.
With the Hummer stocked with liquor, the trip to WV was painless since they just continued with the usual banter while throwing back drinks. Some of the guys were discussing past or upcoming games, unable to leave the job behind even for a night. They knew the business. You perform, or you are out. If you couldn’t give it one hundred percent, one hundred percent of the time – you were in the wrong business. The wrong sport, for sure. It was mental as much as physical, and you had to stay on top of your game, or someone younger and hungrier would take your spot.
