Jace’s POV

I didn’t sleep much after Emily walked away last night.

Her voice was broken, trembling and it kept replaying in my head.

The way she had leaned into me like I was still her anchor, even though she swore she loved Alex.

The way her eyes looked when she whispered thank you, like I was the only thing keeping her from collapsing completely.

And maybe I was selfish, but I didn’t regret a damn thing.

By the time the sun rose, I’d already decided.

I wasn’t going to sit around waiting for her to hit rock bottom again.

If she needed safe ground, I’d give it to her. Even if it was just dinner.

She answered on the second ring, voice groggy.
