Chapter 5

Emily guessed he must have finally found out from the family doctor.

“I’m not pregnant.”

“Don’t lie to me, Emily. The doctor said you are pregnant.” Wesley yelled in rage.

“Why do you care? It’s none of your business.”

“It’s my business because it’s my child. Come back this instant.”

Sophie’s voice suddenly came through the phone.

“Emily, please think of the baby and what’s best for it. We can raise our babies like the siblings they are.”

Emily couldn’t believe the audacity.

“I am not pregnant anymore.” she answered casually, ignoring the hurt the memory caused her.

“You vile woman. That’s why you disappeared for days. You killed my baby because of bitterness. How could you?”

Ava snatched the phone from Emily’s hand.

“Fuck off Wesley.” She yelled before hanging up and blocking his line.

Emily took a deep breath and sighed.

“I’ll have to change my line.”

Ava agreed. “Yes. Are you really pregnant?”

“I lost the baby.”

She narrated about her accident and how she had spent days in the hospital.

Ava felt nothing but pity for what her friend had gone through.

She gave her a tight hug, reassuring her that everything would be fine.

When Emily was finally calm enough, she broke the news she had been itching to say.

“Emily, I’m going to start working at my brother’s company and I’m going to need my own team. It was the main reason I called you in the first place and thank God I did. I want you to come work for me as an editor.”

Emily couldn’t believe her ears. In a span of minutes, Ava had offered her a home and Job.

No words could justify how grateful she was.

She hugged her friend. “Thank you Ava, I promise I will not let you down.”

Ava gave her a smile. “I know you won’t.”

When her euphoria had calmed down, Emily realized she didn’t know who Ava’s brother was because she never spoke about her family.

“Ava, who’s your brother? You never talked about him.”

“Yeah, because he’s pretty popular. My brother is Alex Hasting.”

Emily felt her mouth drop.

It couldn’t be the Alex Hasting she knew. Could it?

Ava’s look told her it was exactly who she thought it was.

Alex Hasting, the billionaire bachelor who owned the biggest publishing house in the country. Hasting Publishing house was one of the most successful companies in the world, known to publish only the best of the best.

It had become a running joke in the book community that once they saw Hasting as the publishing house, they were immediately buying the book without knowing the name of the book or author.

Many said the best thing about the company was the handsome bachelor billionaire who owned it.

He was every woman’s dream and even had many fan pages dedicated to him.

Despite many women throwing themselves at him, Alexander remained single for unknown reasons.

His rude and cold attitude was no secret to all but it didn’t stop the ladies from fawning over him.

Alex Hasting stepped out of the car into his company with his assistant right on his heels.

He ignored all the unfortunate employees that respectfully greeted him and made his way to his private elevator.

“Have you found her?” he asked his assistant, as soon as the doors closed.

The assistant adjusted his glasses and swallowed hard.

“No, but we will soon,” he answered.

Alex’s face deepened in a frown. He wondered why he was surrounded by incompetent people.

Firstly, the stupid hospital had let a patient sneak out under their noses and now he’s assistant couldn’t even do the proper work of finding her.

With all the resources they had, how hard could it be to find a single person?

His frown deepened as he remembered how he had gotten into the mess in the first place.

Somehow, he had let his dumb friend pressure him to attend a boring party.

It was typical of Ezra to drink a lot of alcohol on every occasion and Alex would be forced to be his chauffeur as the responsible adult.

Alex had been looking forward to going home and having a nice shower when the lady had popped out of nowhere.

He had tried to hit the brakes on time but there was no stopping the inevitable.

He couldn’t believe his luck when the doctor announced the woman was pregnant and had lost her baby.

Even though it wasn’t primarily his fault, Alex could already see the lawsuit that would be coming.

He had seen his fair share of greedy people over the years.

The plan was simple. Pay for all the hospital bills and reach a settlement once the woman awoke but because of the stupid hospital, the woman had vanished.

He was almost certain she was out there searching for the best lawyers.

“Find her or I’ll have your head.” he threatened his assistant, just as the elevator doors opened.

Alex’s office was painted all black and every decor matched the aesthetics, including his line of pens.

He unbuttoned his jacket before taking a seat on the large black chair.

There was a file neatly arranged on the desk.

Alex opened it to see pictures of different people and their credentials.

“What’s this?” he asked.

His assistant looked up from the list of schedules they had for the day.

“Your sister sent those. It’s the list of people she’s hiring for her team,” he explained.

Alex went through the list and came to a stop at the familiar face.

He couldn’t believe it was the same woman he had been searching for.

His eyes went over her details.

Emily Byrce.

Age - Twenty Four

He recognized the college as the same one his sister had attended.

That was all.

Again, his face twisted into a frown as different questions flooded his mind.

What was his sister’s relationship with this woman?

And why was she being employed without any work experience?
