Chapter 83
Alex’s POV
The house was quiet except for the faint hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak in the wood as the night settled deeper outside.
I had left the office hours ago but even at home I couldn’t shake the heaviness of what happened with Emily.
What I had done with her.
What I couldn’t take back.
The couch across from me was scattered with unopened files, a glass of whiskey which was already sitting half-empty on the table.
I wasn’t a big drinker, not really, but tonight the burn of alcohol felt like the only thing keeping me sane.
A knock at the door broke the silence. Three firm raps followed by one lighter one.
That was Ezra. He knocks like that.
I dragged myself up, running a hand through my hair before opening the door.
“Finally,” he muttered, stepping inside a grin plastered across his face. “You know, most people actually open the door when someone knocks, not five minutes later.”
I smirked
