Frostmere had spent eighty years advertising itself as the safest territory in the north.
By sunrise, every gate had a Concord flag hanging from it.
Mara stared through the carriage window at the banners and made a disgusted sound.
"That is subtle."
"Harlan Grey has always confused obedience with diplomacy," Lucien said from the opposite seat. "He once signed three separate trade agreements with the same grain route because he was afraid to say no to anyone."
I looked at him. "Why are you here?"
"Because you left without inviting me. I took it personally."
Mara did not look away from the gates. "We are not starting a war in Frostmere."
"Agreed,"
