Chapter 35
Ronan's POV
Nia Alder stood at the bottom of Frostmere's courthouse steps between her parents. She wore a white dress under a coat that was too large for her. One of its buttons hung by a thread. She kept rubbing that button with her thumb, a small movement that belonged to her while everything else about the square had been arranged by adults.
Mara saw her as soon as the carriage stopped. She took a step to get out, then waited for me to open the door because the drop to the paving was higher than it looked. I had heard her retch into a cloth on the last hill and knew what waiting had cost her.
Lina Alder recognized her. She moved toward us before a Concord officer barred the way. Nia caught the back of her mother's sleeve and would not let it go.
