Eva chose a bar with a dance floor, a live band, and chairs nobody could remain comfortable in for an entire evening.

“Deliberate,” she told Diana when they arrived. “I know your habits.”

Diana handed her the present. “I have spent years finding good chairs.”

“And tonight you can spend three hours away from one.”

Gabriel took their coats while Eva opened the parcel. The earrings inside were small enough to wear to work and bright enough to make her stop teasing for a moment.

“You remembered.”

“You showed me the photograph twice.”

“Three times. You were distracted by a man.”
