Lily wrapped a towel around her trembling body. She stood on the inside of the patio doors, the screeching alarm piercing through her ears like an ice pick. Finally the shrill sound stopped, casting everything into silence. From the other room she could hear the guys talking as they came back out. Like her, they’d wrapped towels around their bodies.

“What was it?” she asked when they came back into view.

Travis shrugged, resting his hands on narrow hips. “Someone obviously broke in. They knocked over a vase. That was the breaking glass that we heard. I don’t think they were counting on an alarm system.”

“So what do we do now?”

“The cops will be here any minute.”

“The cops?” she squeaked.

He nodded slowly. “Yes, they have to respond to the alarm.”

“I think we should tell them what is going on,” Kyle said.
