Chapter 5

Monday morning found Lily a bundle of raw nerves as she sat at the breakfast table absently chewing on a bagel and sipping her coffee. Kyle and Travis were ready for work, as was she.

“Are you ready? I can give you a lift,” Kyle said as he slung the strap of his messenger bag over his shoulder while cradling a to-go mug of coffee.

“I guess,” she sighed.

“Hey, everything is going to work out,” Travis said as he pulled her into the circle of his arms and kissed her gently.

“I wish I could be so sure,” she said.

“It will.”

As she was getting ready to leave, her phone buzzed in her pocket. A knot of lead formed in the pit of her stomach. With panicked eyes, she looked from the screen to Travis then Kyle.

“What is it?” Kyle asked, alarm tinting his own voice.

“It’s Allen, my boss,” she said shakily.

“Go ahead and answer.”

She blew out a steady breath before tapping the green button. “Good morning, Allen,” she said, with far more
