Chapter 4. Dark Region Pack (2)
Alinta Devereaux
After fixing my luggage, I went out to explore the entire pack. It was like a simple village, with the alpha as the chief. When I first arrived here, I felt like I was transported into a new era, rather than into a new world.
The place where the pack lived was called Mount Caldus. Here, the weather was hot and humid. For someone like me who enjoyed warm temperatures, the mountain was the ideal place to live. Even so, snowy and cold areas intrigued me and drew me in. Can’t help it. Who would dislike snow? Certainly, not me.
As I walked by, men doing their daily jobs greeted me from time to time. Werewolves were patrolling the village, ensuring the safety of the ten women and children. I also noticed the werewolves in their wolf forms lurking around the forest—the pack warriors. They spend the majority of their time appearing as giants and furry wolves. And they were all brown.
During the hunting festival, I saw Alpha Drake in his wolf form. He was the biggest and strongest. In addition to his dark brownish colour, he had five golden streaks on his back. I asked around and discovered that the greater the amount of the streak, the stronger the werewolf. The limit was ten streaks, and only the elders achieved this.
On the other hand, when it came to the women in the pack, they treated me like air. Women’s jealousy would always be present, no matter where you were. They despised me for attracting the attention of the men. And they detested me because I was a beautiful and powerful woman, which the powerful werewolves preferred to have as a mate.
“Move! You’re getting in the way!”
And every now and then, they’d surprise me by suddenly speaking to me, like now. If they were not insulting my personality, they would shout at me and give me ugly faces.
I gave the woman a sweet smile. After hundreds of years of trying, she was carrying her two-year-old son, her second child. I had no idea what her name was, and I had no desire to find out. Only Luna Hyacinth, whose name I was willing to remember.
“You can go first,” I said, stepping to the side to allow her to pass. Despite having a space as wide as a house, I graciously stepped aside for her.
“Tsk!” The woman eyed me from head to toe. “You’re willing to share a road but so selfish when it comes to sharing a medicine to help a woman conceive successfully,” she said contemptuously. “What? Do you want our Luna to notice you? to take care of you? Or did you want our alpha’s attention?”
She glared at me. “Shame on you!” she continued, not waiting for me to respond. “Soul branding is irreversible. And even if it did, don’t expect him to be interested in a seductress like you!”
My eyes twinkled with great amusement. I won’t lie. Those men and women who loved jumping to conclusions without proper evidence always amazed me.
What made them think I was after their alpha? Am I that stupid in their eyes? Why would I invest my time in someone whose soul was linked to another? Not to mention, I had never shown romantic interest in a man who was already taken. And I would never like Alpha Drake in such a manner.
And…
Why should I give my medicines to women I dislike? I don’t mind donating, but not to people who have treated me poorly.
I sniggered. I circled the woman, and when I got to her back, I whispered, “You want my medicine, don’t you?”
The woman turned frigid.
Confirmed. This one, or perhaps all of the pack members, sought my medicine.
Heh.
I couldn’t blame them. Which woman in this world wouldn’t be tempted by a medicine that could easily make them pregnant?
Luna Hyacinth, cursed for centuries, became pregnant unexpectedly just a year after breaking the curse. And it was all thanks to my incredible herbal knowledge and, of course, my power. This spectacle certainly enticed these women.
I darted to the child, who returned my gaze with innocence and cuteness. Sighing in disappointment, I returned to face the woman and stated, “Those medicines were dumped in the river for the fish to drink. If you’re that desperate, go filter it in the river.”
The woman gasped. “How could you throw away such good medicine!?”
“That’s mine,” I said, shrugging. “Whatever I want to do with it has nothing to do with you.”
I left immediately after saying those words, fearing that I would do something I would later regret. I wouldn’t be sorry if I set that woman on fire. In fact, not setting her ablaze was regrettable in and of itself. However, I changed my mind after considering how the child would be raised without a mother. Although, perhaps not having such a mother would be better for the child.
As I continued my stroll, I came across a lake, the first place I saw upon entering this realm.
It felt nostalgic.
I sat down on the grass and began remembering my first few days in this world. There were times when I felt lonely and homesick.
Nieva was annoying, but at least my life was entertaining. My father was strict and dedicated in training me to become a perfect monarch for our kingdom so that he and my mother could finally have their time and travel the world without us, the children who always took our mother’s time. But I still missed the two of them. And there was this adorable little baby who was spoiled rotten and never took ‘no’ for an answer.
Oh, and I missed those witches and wizards who were always gossiping. They were my source of information. The most convenient method of gathering information.
If I could go back in time, I would have smacked Nieva in the face a hundred times when she offered me the grimoire.
After several hours, I decided to return. The night was obvious, and I needed to travel early in the morning, so I had to sleep early.
Alpha Drake, Beta Tyler, and Gamma Lake were lounging on the couch when I arrived. They quickly smiled when they saw me. Strange, though. Since this morning, their smiles hadn’t reached their ears like they usually did.
“Where have you gone?” Tyler inquired, his face filled with genuine concern. Given that, I relaxed my guard once more.
“I went to have a walk.”
“The summit won’t take that long. Don’t miss the pack that much,” Lake joked.
I sat down, then shrugged—I wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone, to be honest.
“Lake will bring you to the summit. I won’t be able to relax if I just let anyone accompany you,” Alpha Drake said.
“It’s not like I need someone to protect me,” I explained. “Though, I certainly need someone who can show me the way,” I added, indicating that I wasn’t bothered by Lake’s company.
Alpha Drake chuckled. “That’s true.”
Alpha Drake’s instruction took almost an hour to complete. Some of his words were clear, while others were not. To put it simply, I didn’t understand what he was saying. I was tired and needed to sleep. But because Alpha Drake was only concerned about my wellbeing, I put up with it.
“Do you understand?” Alpha Drake asked.
“Yes. Absolutely,” I answered with confidence.
“Then, have a good night’s sleep. We won’t disturb you further.”
“Thank you. I shall go, then.”
I smiled at each of them, especially Tyler, who had barely said anything. Then I left them to rest finally.
