Nikki was curious to know what the outcome of my conversation had been, but I was keener on dismissing her. I wanted to spend time with her and even force her to stay overnight, but if I had to deal with my Rebecca situation before it was too late, I knew that now was the right time.
“She is predictable, she said she wanted to say hello because she was passing by.” I rubbed the back of my neck, knowing how obvious that was a lie.
She crossed one leg over the other and raised one suspicious eyebrow at me. “Chad...”
“Nikki, just ignore her, please.” I sat in front of her and poured her a glass of cold water. “You look like you can really use some of that.”
She didn’t say anything in response, successfully making me further uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry.” I heaved a sigh. “Trust me.” I felt a lump grow in my throat from saying the words, especially knowing I was not worthy of her trust.
“Just know what you’re doing,” she said with a small frow
