Chapter 10
My heartbeat raced faster than a deer as I positioned my hand in such a way that my knuckle was jutting directly on the door, preparing to knock. A lot of what ifs ran through my mind but I was determined to do whatever it took to help my mother. I had made up my mind to resolve any issue I had with Jake, collect the money that I needed from him, and break up with him when I had gotten everything I needed. After all, he didn’t deserve my love and loyalty anymore. I took in deep breaths, bracing myself from the unknown as I knocked. Once. Twice. Thrice.
“Who’s there?” Jake’s deep baritone carried through the house and met me at the door. His voice alone startled me, and I started reconsidering my decision of coming here. And it even intensified when the entrance door abruptly opened.
I was met with Jake’s warm blue eyes that brimmed with happiness but more of a fulfilled expectation — he knew I was going to show up at his doorstep one day. His full lips slowly curve
