Chapter 58
Daniel’s POV
The grand ballroom buzzed with a soft noise. People talked, glasses clinked. Soft music played from a band in the corner. This was a very fancy party, full of people in expensive clothes. Everyone looked polished and important. I stood with Jake near a tall, white stone pillar. I held my drink. Jake, who always found things to joke about, leaned closer to me.
“Look at them, Daniel,” he quietly said. His eyes looked over a couple covered in shiny jewelry. “They are like big, colorful birds showing off. All outside flash, not much real inside.”
I gave a small laugh. “Someone has to buy all that stuff, Jake. The people who make and sell jewelry need to make money too.”
“True, true,” he agreed, taking a sip from his glass. “But think about their talks. ‘Oh, honey, did you see that old TV show about rich people? So real!’ Meanwhile, their secret bank accounts in other countries are doing the real work, I bet.”
