The morning light filtered softly through the curtains, casting long streaks of gold across the bed. She was still asleep, curled into my chest, her cheek resting just above my heart. I didn’t move, couldn’t move, because this, right here, was the only place that made sense anymore.
Because I knew that outside this bedroom was chaos, complete chaos that I could not explain, that I did not want to talk about, that I knew was going to tear her apart. She was going to be broken.
