The way he said it, calm, mocking, like the years apart were just a game to him, made my wolf claw to the surface. It took everything in me not to lose control, to remind myself that we were amongst humans. And I knew that he was playing with that card. And then he had the audacity to mention Riley. His niece. The child who had nothing to do with me. And yet. I stood by her mother’s side when no one else would have.

When he was away, I was the one who stood by her mother, and yet she, just like everyone else, turned her back on me. Not only that, she tried to turn the Council on me.

“Find him.” My voice cut like steel as I gave the order. “Find Ryan. I don’t care where he’s hiding or what hole he’s crawled into, drag him back here. Alive. If anyone
