Chapter 142
Selene
The infirmary was quieter now. Night had pressed its cold fingers against the windows, and the scent of antiseptic had dulled into something muted, almost sweet. My hands were raw from scrubbing basins and changing linens, but the ache in them was nothing compared to the twist in my stomach.
It was nothing compared to the fear that I felt whenever I caught him looking at me, or whenever I thought that he was his silence, the way that he was avoiding talking to everyone. I just found myself dreading the moment that I would lay her eyes on him or that he would look at me.
I’d managed to avoid him since he woke up. That had been deliberate. The less time I spent near him, the less chance there was for him to notice anything. But tonight, one of the nurses had waved me over without even looking up from her chart.
“Selene, help clean Beta Kai’s area.” She said coldly as she watched me sweep the floor.
