When I finally broke my gaze from her countenance, I felt dizzy and lightheaded, as if a mighty whirlwind were swirling around my head. To make matters worse, a loud rumbling sound echoed throughout the entire cave. It was impossible to determine the source, but it sounded like a distant thunderclap or rolling drumbeat. My ears began ringing, and the walls began tilting.

“This is our seer here” he said beside me.

“And it’s her duty to purify every stranger that comes to our clan. And today, that person is you.”

His words brought me out of my stupor. “Now, follow my lead, and we shall begin the ritual together. We cannot afford to delay. The ceremony begins in thirty seconds; remember, you must keep a firm grip on your emotions.”

My heart thundered erratically in my chest, as I attempted to ignore the sudden pressure building inside me. I had never experienced anything like this before, and the sensation left me feeling terrified and uncertain.
