Chapter 9

The shots were coming from all sides, in all directions. Elizabeth didn't know what to do; her legs had become paralyzed, just like her body. Fortunately, Julian was by her side. The brown-haired boy took the reins of both horses and led them out of the gunfire.

"Bow your head!" he shouted.

The raven-haired girl did as he asked and crouched as low as possible. The shots were still ringing out. The agonizing cries of the wounded people echoed in her ears.

Julian guided her behind some rocks high enough to hide both of them and their horses.

"What was that?" she asked after catching her breath.

The young woman was still agitated from the gallop; her hair was tousled, and her eyes were shining with suppressed tears. However, her voice didn't waver at any moment, maintaining that tone that frustrated the boy so much.

Relentless, determined, and yes, somewhat demanding.

"Bandits," he replied as if that explained everything.

A bitter laugh
