Chapter 68. Reluctancy
Madeline’s POV
For some reason, Susan, the mayor’s wife, gives me an ick that until now, I still have not solved. It started when Victor and I went inside the cabin, and while we were negotiating with the mayor, she was with him the whole time – smiling, lowering her head, and caressing the shoulder of the mayor.
“Good day, madame,” I greeted to pay my respects.
She chuckled and bestowed me with her polite smile. “What a lovely young lady you are, but anyway, can I come in?” she asked.
“Oh, yes, of course, madame!” I said and opened the door widely.
“Honey!” the mayor called for her. “Good thing you are here. The countess and I were just talking.”
“Really?”
I watched the mayor and his wife hug in front of me. Suddenly, I was not comfortable. It is not like she would be a disturbance. I don’t know. Even I could not explain it.
