Hannah’s POV
[Flashback continues]
“Have you heard?” one of my coworkers asked.
“Heard what?”
“They are letting more than half of us go.”
My heart instantly dropped. “What? Why?” I asked the poor guy, like he was part of the management board or something.
He shrugged. “The economy, rising costs of things. They just can’t afford to keep us.”
It was bad, really bad.
“How do you know you’ve been let go?”
“Heard they’re going to paste a list at the end of work. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.”
Throughout the day, I wore my heart on my sleeves. I couldn’t afford to lose the job at the moment.
I had only worked there for a little less than a year, and it was the best-paying job I’d had since moving to New York.
Over the years, I’d come to realize job hunting wasn’t the easiest thing to do in this city. I could not afford to lose my job.
