My body crashed into the backseat, my heart thumping painfully against my chest, terrified senseless for Colt's safety, who was still alone out there.
But Axel’s warning reached me, and I rolled onto the floor, ears perked up in alertness as my hand dropped to the fanny pack for my gun.
Rat-tat-tat came the continuous sound of AK-47s outside and my head swam with the last image of Colt I had seen, fighting alone, his back exposed to the many strangers who had broken into panicked stampedes.
The car door jerked open then and my gun was up in a flash, fingers tensed to fire, when something fell through the door and crashed into me on the backseat floor.
I gasped, my gun slipping out of my hand as Axel shut the door, and ran around to the driver’s seat.
