Mr. Bernard appears confused at my question but quickly composes himself. “She is a jewelry designer who works for my wife’s close friend. She is just working as a cover.”

I felt relief and anger at the same time. I was relieved because Avery wasn’t here for the worst reasons I could imagine, and I was angry that she hid such a talent from me.
