Amelia’s POV
The drive back home felt endless.
Neither of us spoke.
I kept my eyes locked on the passing streetlights, my mind replaying everything, over and over, until I felt like I was going to vomit.
By the time we pulled up in front of my house, my hands were balled into fists in my lap and I was one sentence away from breaking down in sobs. I reached for the door handle, but Adrian’s voice stopped me.
“Wait,” Adrian whispered.
I froze but didn’t look at him.
“Even if you never want anything to do with me again, please,” he said, “just hear me out.”
I should have slammed the door and walked away.
But I didn’t.
I squeezed my eyes shut. His explanation wouldn’t change anything. Whatever excuse he had, whatever justification; what difference did it make?
But I sat still, gripping my knees as Adrian inhaled sharply, like he was bracing himself for what he was about to say.
