The slap echd through the room like a thunderstorm about to break.

Nina's legs buckled and she stumbled to the floor from the sharp impact. Her eyes stung. Her cheeks burned. There was a loud ringing inside her ears.

She clenched her face tightly in a desperate attempt to soothe the pain shooting through her cheeks up to her brain, but she couldn’t. Despite all her efforts to remain collected, hot tears finally leaked out of her eyes.
