The protectors around me break off just enough so I can see through them. Assanan is distracted now by Cassian and the others approaching him from the side facing away from me.

When I saw the spark of amulet power inside, I finally understood what they were doing. They didn’t want my father to look at me. He must have been doing something to control my mind when our eyes met, even though I’d closed off the mind-link.

I nod to Freyja, hoping she sees that as a signal of understanding. I want to see what’s happening, but I won’t meet Assanan’s gaze again. The others back off more, so I believe it worked.
