Chapter 99. Together

Lyra POV

I startle as the High Priestesses and the guards change position, blocking my view of Assanan and everything in front of me, including the battle.

Confusion washes over me. I wish I could ask them why they’re doing this. I feel like I need to lock on Assanan’s gaze to read what he’s planning to do. Without that, how am I ever going to use the amulet?

I consider opening the mind-link, just for a second, to talk to Cassian at least. He can explain what they’re trying to do, and I’ll explain that I’m trying to get a read on Assanan so I can take the power of the dark amulet away from him.

But then, I feel it. Something is... released in me, as though my mind had been bound in chains and now it is free.

A strange and wonderful emotion threads across my nerves, a salve for the pa
