Chapter 120. Heart Strings

By the time Commander Reynog calls for us to break camp, the straps of my backpack are cutting into my shoulders, and my shoes have left a stinging sore on my heel. Others have grumbled for miles about having preferred to run the distance in wolf form, but the commander insists that we toughen up in human form.
And I’m not complaining. A little discomfort is nothing compared to what we face in battle. I agree with him. We have to be as tough as possible so we can face any adversary. The people of our kingdom depend on us.
It’s my third year in this battalion, and I have an eye to the future. The commander has already admitted that he’s impressed with my abilities, and that puts me in line for a promotion to Royal Guardsman.
