After a relaxing day of classes and some time studying in his room, Jake wondered what Odette was up to. He considered going down to the basement, and he hadn’t worked out that day either. He thought about her good moods recently but also wondered how she felt sitting alone for long periods during the day. They only saw her in the evenings or sometimes him in between his classes during the day. He had been untying Odette for short periods so that she could get in some exercise, stretch and feel a little better, but he wanted to do more for her because being a captive couldn’t be good for the mind.

It wasn’t like he could hook her up to the internet for something to do—that way, she might be able to alert authorities. She didn’t know their address, but anyone could research where the Beaufort family home was. He thought hard about what might give her some entertainment or a sense of meaning.
