"What is your surname?" I ask and suddenly realize that I’ve never asked before. He’d never let it slip.
"Anderson." He says something quietly. "Does that surprise you?"
"No, you’ve never said it or brought it up. You don’t give me much information about yourself." I just give a casual shrug. "I just thought it would be nice to know before I go see your family."
He didn’t say anything for a while after that. He almost looked like he didn’t know what to say.
"Look, I don’t want you to feel like you’re in the dark. If you ask, I’ll tell you anything you want to know. I’ve already told you more than most people I talk to." He is quiet.
Then they start calling people in first class and members to board. He clears his throat, gets up, and tells me to do the same with a nod.
