When Vince got home, I could sense some form of discomfort on his face. Even though he didn’t want to talk about what was wrong with him immediately, I knew something was amiss.
It was my duty as a mother and a wife to know when something was wrong with the people I love.
As Vince and I embraced, his news hung heavily in the air. I could sense a weight on his shoulders, and the familiar scent of comfort now mingled with an undercurrent of tension.
“Vince,” I whispered, breaking the silence that followed his embrace. “What happened at work today?”
He sighed deeply, his breath warm against my ear. “Laura, I… I got sacked. They let me go, and I didn’t see it coming.”
My heart sank. The excitement and optimism from my first day at the publishing company suddenly felt distant. “I’m so sorry, Vince. What happened? Why did they let you go?”
