Chapter 131. Road to Freedom

The shot sounded out like thunder throughout the building. Captain Varen's head snapped back, a perfect hole appearing in the center of his forehead. He released Zayne's arm and crumpled to the ground, his body twitching once before falling still.

Anna grabbed Zayne's hand and ran. They sprinted through the secret passageway, heading to the flower garden pathway that led to the gates.

Behind them, the sound of boots echoed through the corridors.

Varen's backup.

"We have to make it to the gates," Anna gasped, pulling Zayne along. "We have to get out of the city. It's our only chance."

They burst through another back door and into the flower garden of Blood Fang capital. The boots were getting closer and closer.

"They're coming," Zayne panted, his lungs burning. "Mother, they're coming for us."

"I know," Anna said, her voice tight with terror. "I know, baby. Just keep running. Don't stop. Whatever you do, don't stop."
