“Now, how the hell am I supposed to tell her about all you did and why I have you in here, huh?!” Lucien snapped, his voice ricocheting off the cold walls of the interrogation room like a warning shot. The dim overhead light cast sharp shadows across Mario’s face, highlighting every scrape, every bruise, every mark from the choices he’d made.
Mario’s chest rose and fell heavily. He could feel each breath burning inside him. For the first time in hours, regret crept into his gut—not for himself, not for the consequences coming, but because of their mother. Because she had begged them, pleaded even, to stop hurting each other. And here they were again.
“You could let me go,” Mario said, forcing a shrug meant to seem casual but trembling slightly. He lifted his gaze just in time to see a dangerous smile curl the edge of Lucien’s lips.
