“Even so, that doesn’t mean… you shouldn’t…” Ingrid looked to Lily for support. “Say something!”
“When it comes to stuff like this, Jenny is judge, jury, and executioner.” Lily shook her head. “You should already know that this isn’t a business where people just let things go. This place was protected by… cockatrices?” She looked down at the nearest corpse. “I’ve never seen one in person.”
“They’re stone cold killers,” muttered Jenny. “With a witch living nearby for backup. She was coming down here to eat your skin, little girl, to roast you on a spit and chew you up like gum.”
Ingrid’s mouth was suddenly dry. “What about the woman working the front desk?” she asked. “Did you kill her, too?”
“Of course not.” Jenny licked her lips. “She knits hats for orphans.”
Ingrid closed her eyes and covered her ears just a split second before the gun went off. Lily made a gagging sound, then grabbed Ingrid by the elbow and turned her around.
