“What changed?” asked Ingrid. The demon didn’t bother looking her way.

Lily sighed and added another piece of food to the plate. “What changed?” she asked.

The demon smirked. “Somebody killed off a bunch of her pets, then smashed all of their eggs.”

“The cockatrice?” The memory of the eggs crunching beneath the soles of her feet made Ingrid’s stomach lurch. The demon didn’t answer her, but did start laughing. All of this had happened because of her.

“So this woman is with the auction house?” Lily asked.

The demon waited for more food to hit the plate, then shook his head. “I don’t know anything about that,” he said. “But those pets of hers needed a safe place to stay and breed. I haven’t seen her so angry before.
