Nathan's POV
I don’t need to ask if anyone was with him. It’s clear from her voice that it was the same situation. No staff. No warning. Just silence and death. And none of it makes any sense. I get it, when someone is going to be discharged, deemed fit, they are off monitors and such, and maybe they don't get checked on often. But no one at all noticing someone going into the room?
“And your brother?” I whisper, already dreading the answer.
She takes a shaky breath. “That’s when my adoptive mom showed up. She knew my parents. She’d been close to my mom, I think. After the funeral, she stayed with us, moved into the house while everything was getting sorted. We were meant to move, to start over. But then my brother got sick too. Just like them. Same symptoms. Same ending. He died in the hospital.”
