"Who is Manuel to you?" Max asked. His gaze pierced into hers making Pandora tremble as she thought he must have found out some news about Manuel. 

Pandora's lips parted but no words escaped from them. She was suddenly blank, with no excuse. She couldn't think of any lies, she wasn't ready to tell him about everything she had gone through. Seeing how perfect his life is, she felt she was a fool to have been holding on all this while. And telling him about who Manuel really is, is like telling him that she was the infamous Pandora Herrera. Hell no! She wasn't ready to go through that road, and certainly not now when her life is at stake. She needs as much protection as she could think of and right now Max is in the perfect position to help her. She knew all she needed was a lie so he would be able to sympathize with her.
