Chantel suddenly stops crying. Her breath catches as he cocks the gun, the clicking sound echoing through this damned place.

"I'm sorry you have to see this," he tells her, oblivious to Laurence's approach. And even if he does notice, I doubt he's banking on it.

"Yeah, I am too," Chantel replies, her voice laced with resignation.

It's at that instant, that fleeting second when her eyes meet mine, that my world stops. I know what she's going to do. I release V and lunge toward her, but I'm too far away. I scream at Laurence, but it all unfolds too quickly.
