Author’s POV
The first sign they noticed was the sky.
Morning always comes softly and beautifully, with light breaking slowly over the trees, touching the rooftops, warming the ground. But that morning… the light never settled.
It dimmed and even faded. Like something was standing between the sun and the world. Like the sun was too scared that the darkness would overshadow it. A scout stumbled through the main gates just before the horns sounded. His clothes were torn, his face pale under the dirt, chest heaving like he had run without stopping.
“They’re coming,” he rasped.
The guards stiffened immediately. “Who are coming and how many are they?”
The scout shook his head, eyes wide in a way that didn’t look normal. “I don’t— I couldn’t count—”
