Chapter 144. Execution

The feast was gradually taking shape. It was still early in the morning, and people were expected to start trickling in at six in the evening. That was not what worried me the most, nor was the fact that we might suffer a terrible attack from the sect.
Jason’s execution was imminent.
Chris had been awake since early morning, roaming the halls in his casual clothes, staring at the floor, not even looking up when spoken to.
“What will it be like?” he asked me. I was the queen and knew what the methods of execution for treason would be.
“Hanging, I suppose, that is almost certain,” I answered sincerely. I looked at him closely. He had dark circles under his eyes; he couldn’t have slept all night. “Are you not feeling well? It’s a stupid question, I know, but if you want to say something.”
“No, it’s all right. I think it’s going to be creepy for me until the end.” Chris heaved a sigh. “He’s not the first friend I’ve seen die, you know.”
