Everyone who passed me in the palace congratulated me on my pregnancy. Those little details made me forget that we were at war. My relationship with my mother improved considerably after so much fighting, because we were united in wanting the best for my babies.

“Are you alright?” Carmen asked, standing beside me on one of the balconies.

I had been speechless.

“I’m thinking about Lily,” I replied with complete honesty.

It was true. Sometimes I couldn’t stop thinking about how she was, whether she was safe. We had so many enemies that I wouldn’t believe she was okay until I saw her with my own eyes.

“They’re there to protect her. I guarantee they’ll find her.” Carmen pointed towards the horizon, as if they were somewhere out there.

“But that’s not the problem,” I said, lowering my head. “The problem is where they’ll take her.”
