She wasn’t the same as before. I liked that she had gone back to being a redhead, it was one of the things I liked most about her. It was worrying to see her so conscious and lucid. She had her bursts of madness, but they were less frequent.

Getting to where we would have to cross the portal was a tortuous journey for me. I didn’t want to cross it and at the same time, I condemned myself for not having the courage to do it either.

Sallie took my hand. We were both erratic, neither of us was made for a normal life.

“We’ll be together there too,” she said, as if she could read my thoughts.

I smiled. Her eyes rested on mine. I leaned in to kiss her, afraid of passing through her like a ghost. Nothing like that happened. I was able to kiss her and I held her close to me, feeling every part of her skin. The beats of our hearts seemed to synchronize.

I wanted to stay by her side even in the world of the living. It was a fear I had been harboring.
