Chapter 66. May 22, 1553 On the Move to Kentucky
Sleep came to Skye quickly that evening. This was the first time she was not wholly consumed with tossing and turning. She had Zhang to thank for the comfort of sleeping until a brisk northern breeze awoke her from a deep sleep. But they left Zhang ages ago and were on the run toward Kentucky as Durga wanted.
She lay still and prayed tonight would be different, where she’d escape the nightmares. But as the pictures started to form in her head, she realized that her prayers had gone unanswered again. There was now no denying the horror any longer. Alec and Armand would come for them, and soon.
Morning broke, and Skye fitted herself in a light blue bonnet and matching long, flowing country dress. She started to gather what little they had in her hands. A pot, pan, and hairbrush were the first she grabbed as she ran out towards the wagon.
