In all honesty, Carlos’s resistance to Fiona had long fizzed out. All that was left was a reluctance to take the last step forward and an uncertainty about if he really should. The kind of feeling you have when you want to do something but are afraid of it turning out bad in the long run, so much so that you decide to let it go even if you know that you would likely regret that decision in the future.
